This Saturday we went to Anchorage for the Fur Rondy. It lasts for 10 days and was started back in the 30's as a festival that coincided with when the miners and trappers came to town with their winter yield. Their is a Fur auction, dog sled races, Native Blanket Toss and tons of other things. This year we saw the Grand Parade, went to "Meet the World", watched the finish of the dog sled race and saw the model train exhibits.
Ellie all bundled up to watch the Grand Parade
Ellie loved watching the bands play during the parade. She would dance to the music.
Ellie waving to the horses and their riders. For some reason Ellie really enjoyed waving at everybody. There was even a trolley bus full of senior citizens that went by and Ellie waved like crazy to them all. They were all smiling, pointing and waving back at her. It was pretty cute :)
Star the Reindeer.....Anchorage's mascot.
Meet the World was a gathering of about 30 diffrent cultures. They all had their own booths which included maps, displays, artifacts and food. Each person that came received a "passport" as they entered. It had two pages of info for each culture and a place for a special stamp that each booth gave when you visited. it was really neat to see all the interesting Native clothing and items as well as see items form the countries. All of the people in the booths now live in Alaska, but represent their original culture. The Korean and Chinese booths had people that made Ellie neat little posters of her name in their languages.
An Alaskan Native Dance.
A Korean Dance.
Ellie enjoying the bead work on a outfit. I think she would love to get to wear something like it :)
Dog Sled Races
These races even included kids as young as 4, but we only saw the adult racers.
The Model Train Exhibit.
Ellie really liked seeing the trains. She had a really hard time not being able to touch, but did pretty well just observing with her eyes.
