We were able to go once to Gem Mountain. it is here that there is a sapphire mine and you can buy buckets of gravel and sift through it to find sapphires. The road there across the mountain is now closed due to a large forest fire so we probably won't be able to go again this year though we wanted to. I also bought a bag of gravel that had large purple amethysts in it. Ellie and Owen had fun finding them since they were larger stones. Ellie was actually pretty good at spotting the tiny sapphires and she found several on her own.
First you have to sift all the dirt and tiny stuff out of your gravel in the water trough.
Then you dump it on the table and start looking. If you sifted correctly your sapphires should be in the center of your pile.
Owen found some amythests.
It was pretty hot, sunny and tedious so Ellie and Owen found some shade under the table and sifted and poked around in that gravel.
We ended up with three large cutable stones that are about 4 carets.
